Wrestling Earns Comeback Win Against Parkside

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team posted a come-from-behind 18-17 triumph against Division II Parkside Wednesday night at Kachel Gymnasium to bring the Sake Bottle rivalry trophy back to Whitewater.

Trailing 17-6 in the dual with three matches remaining, the Warhawks reeled off three consecutive victories to earn the team win in dramatic fashion in front of an electric crowd inside the arena.

Nationally-ranked Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington) started the run for UW-Whitewater at 184 pounds, collecting a pair of escapes in the third round of his bout for a 4-3 decision against the Rangers' Reece Worachek.

At 197, Chad Richards (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) put the crowd into a frenzy with a first-round pin against Rodsean Graham, bringing the Warhawks to within 17-15 with the six-point swing.

Cadin Koeppel (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) closed out the UW-W victory, riding a first-period takedown to a 3-1 decision against Lloyd Reynolds of Parkside.

Other Warhawk winners included Ethan Pogorzelski (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) at 133 pounds and Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) at 149. Pogorzelski recorded a pair of takedowns on his way to a 5-3 decision against Joey Roti, while Burford, who is nationally ranked by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, came back from a 4-2 deficit for a 7-6 decision against Nathan Hensley.

The Sake Bottle rivalry trophy originated in 1975 when Rangers coach Jim Koch and Warhawks coach Willie Myers toured Japan and Korea with an NAIA All-State Team. Mr. Hatta, the former president of Japanese wrestling who is considered the father of the sport in Japan, presented the two coaches with a Sake Bottle, which became the traveling trophy in the rivalry dual.

The Warhawks return to action this Saturday at the Adrian College Duals in Adrian, Mich.
