No. 9 Volleyball Wraps Up Dig Panici Classic With Win

The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team used a potent offensive attack Saturday to defeat Wheaton (Ill.) 25-13, 25-13, 25-18 on the second day of the Dig Panici Classic at Russell Arena.
 
The Warhawks (23-1 overall), who also extended their active win streak to 15 matches, posted a team hitting percentage of .392, the team's second-highest mark in a match this season, and committed a season-low seven attack errors in the contest.
 
Erin McNeil (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) tallied a team-high nine kills on a .562 hitting percentage and added two blocks. Emma Aske (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) registered seven kills on a .333 hitting percentage with three service aces, eight digs and two blocks, and Jenna Weinfurt (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) collected eight kills and one block.
 
Morgan Wardall (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) and Payton Kuepers (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) finished with four kills apiece. Kirsten Anderson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) and Hannah Proctor (Durand, Ill./Durand) each recorded two kills, and Anderson added three service aces and two blocks.
 
Paige Manssen (Bull Valley, Ill./McHenry West) totaled 17 assists to go with six digs and two service aces. KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) amassed 15 assists in the match. Morgan Jensen (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) posted eight digs, three assists and two service aces from the back row.
 
UW-Whitewater jumped out to a 7-1 advantage in the opening set and didn't look back. The team extended the lead later in the set on Sotiros' serve, and recorded two of the final three points in the period to take a 1-0 match lead.
 
The Warhawks took another early lead in the second, extending it all the way out to 15-5. An ace by Anderson gave UW-W a 2-0 advantage in the match.
 
UW-Whitewater took the early lead again in the third, but the Thunder (13-12) rallied with five straight points to pull within 18-14. The Warhawks ended the match on a 7-4 run, including a kill by Aske for the clinching point.
 
UW-Whitewater hosts UW-Stout Friday for its final Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match of the regular season. First serve is set for 6 p.m. on Scotie Hudson Bobblehead Night at Russell Arena.
