Dig Panici Background Information
The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team will hold its annual Dig Panici Night this Friday at 7 p.m. against Cornell (Iowa) at Russell Arena.
The event, which has been held since 2013 as part of the two-day Dig Panici Classic, celebrates the life or former Warhawk Lisa Panici, who competed for UW-Whitewater as a freshman in 2010 before being diagnosed with stage four brain cancer later that same year.
Nicknamed "The Irresistible Force," Panici battled against the disease for two years before passing away on December 26, 2012. The Warhawks' locker room was dedicated as the Lisa Panici Locker Room, and her No. 12 was officially retired.
Fans are invited to purchase t-shirts and make donations Friday night to the Dig Panici Scholarship Fund, which is awarded annually to two UW-Whitewater students who are physically or mentally disabled. All proceeds from Friday's event will benefit the scholarship program.
The Warhawks also encourage fans to remain silent for the first two UW-W points of the match. On the third point, the team, Lisa's family and friends and all UW-Whitewater fans are invited to cheer as loudly as possible in memory of Lisa and in support of Warhawk volleyball.
UW-Whitewater (21-1 overall) enters the weekend on a 13-match winning streak.
