No. 17 Baseball Sweeps Pair on Opening Day

The No. 17 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team posted a 2-0 record Saturday on its first day at Derby City Field in Louisville, Ky.

The Warhawks (2-0 overall) opened the 2020 campaign with an 11-0 triumph over Spalding (Ky.), and capped the day with a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over Anderson (Ind.).

Trailing 4-2 heading to the ninth inning against Anderson (0-1), UW-Whitewater surged ahead with five runs in the top half of the frame, including three to take the lead on a one-out, bases-loaded triple by senior centerfielder Noah Jensen (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper). Junior shortstop Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) drove Jensen home with a bunt single, and freshman pinch hitter Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West) brought home another run to give the team a 7-4 advantage.

The Ravens rallied in the bottom half of the inning, plating two runs and putting the tying run in scoring position. Freshman pitcher Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) came on with runners at the corners and one out, striking out the final two hitters of the contest to preserve the win and earn his first save.

Jensen and sophomore designated hitter Taylor White (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge) registered two hits apiece. Sophomore left fielder Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) scored two runs and reached base three times with one hit and two walks.

Junior pitcher Evan Sigmund (Oconto Falls, Wis./Oconto Falls) picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of relief. Sophomore Ben Muscatello (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) started the game and struck out six over four innings, and freshman Donovan Brandl (Rudolph, Wis./Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) collected four strikeouts over the next three innings before giving way to Sigmund.

In the opener against Spalding (0-1), the Warhawks jumped on the Golden Eagles early with three runs in the second inning and six in the third. UW-Whitewater out-hit Spalding 12-3 in the contest.

Sophomore catcher Ryan Norton (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and three runs batted in. Brandl and senior third baseman Ben Wilkins (Sussex, Wis./Lake Country Lutheran) each recorded two hits, two runs scored and one RBI, and Jensen contributed two hits, one run scored and one RBI. Santoro tallied two RBIs.

Junior Matt O'Sullivan (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) and sophomore Hayden Fox (Stockton, Ill./Stockton) combined for nine strikeouts over seven innings of work. O'Sullivan earned the win, allowing only three hits over four frames. Fox tossed the final three innings, allowing only one walk.

The Warhawks conclude their weekend in Louisville Sunday at 11 a.m. with a second game against Spalding.
