The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team started its 2020 season Friday night with a 185.825-180.850 victory at Hamline in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet in St. Paul, Minn.
The Warhawks (1-0 overall, 1-0 WIAC) claimed all four events and the all-around on their way to the win.
UW-Whitewater began its night on the uneven bars with a team score of 44.000. Senior
Acacia Fossum (Gladstone, N.D./Richardton-Taylor) and junior
Blaise Wilson (Thornton, Colo./Legacy) placed 1-2 in the event. Fossum scored a 9.400, followed by Wilson with a 9.300. Freshman
Taiya Stelmachowski (Plainfield, Ill./Central), sophomore
Morgan McEntire (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) and freshman
Faith Mylin (Elgin, Ill./Harvest Christian Academy) finished seventh, eighth and ninth to round out the team's scoring. Stelmachowski posted an 8.600, McEntire registered an 8.500 and Mylin posted an 8.200.
The Warhawks secured the top four spots on vault on their way to a 47.150. Senior
Lauren Marshall (Winthrop Harbor, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) led the group with a 9.625. Sophomore
Rachel Lewellen (Ripley, Miss./Ripley) placed second with a 9.450. Mylin was third with a 9.400, and sophomore
Emily North (Oklahoma City, Okla./Moore) tallied a 9.350 to finish fourth. Freshman
Meg McGinley (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) collected a 9.325 to tie for fifth overall.
Freshman
Karina Sabol (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and McGinley led UW-Whitewater on floor exercise to its best score of the night, a 47.725. Sabol made her Warhawk debut with a 9.775, tied for the No. 20 mark in program history. McGinley scored a 9.600, and was followed by Mylin with her 9.550, good for a tie for third. Fossum and Wilson tied for fifth with matching 9.400s.
The Warhawks finished the meet on the balance beam, scoring a 46.950. Fossum claimed her second event of the night, placing first with a 9.625. Marshall tied for second with a career-best 9.525, and North placed fifth with a 9.375. Mylin tied for sixth with a 9.325, and Sabol rounded out the scoring with a 9.100.
Wilson won the all-around with a 36.800, and Mylin placed second with her 36.475.
UW-Whitewater visits UW-Oshkosh next Friday, Jan. 17, at 6 p.m. for a tri-meet against UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stout.
