The Warhawks limited Concordia-Moorhead's strong rushing attack to 62 yards on 34 carries (1.8 yards per carry) and forced four turnovers on their way to a 20-10 triumph last Saturday. Trailing 10-3 late in the second quarter, UW-Whitewater tallied 17 unanswered points over the last 32 minutes of play and held the ball for more than 22 minutes in the second half.
The Warhawks remained at No. 3 in the D3football.com Top 25, earning 563 points from pollsters. UW-Whitewater trails only No. 1 Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas), which received 24 of the 25 first-place votes, and No. 2 Mount Union (Ohio). The Warhawks were ranked fourth by Lindy's, Street & Smith and D3football.com entering the new season.
St. Xavier, the preseason favorite to win the Midwest Division of the MSFA, is currently ranked fifth in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 National Poll. The Cougars are coming off a bye week after defeating Lawrence Tech (Mich.) on the road to open their season back on Sept. 5. St. Xavier, which led 38-3 at halftime, totaled 430 yards of offense and forced four turnovers, including three interceptions. The Cougars averaged seven yards per offensive play.
SERIES
UW-Whitewater leads the all-time series against St. Xavier, 5-0. All games in the series have been played since 2001, including the Warhawks' 24-9 victory over the Cougars back on Sept. 5, 2008. UW-W led 17-0 early in the second quarter and scored again with 4:07 left in the contest to break open a one-score game. The Warhawks held the ball for more than 32 minutes and forced three turnovers in the game, which was played inside Perkins Stadium. Jordan Wells led the offense with seven receptions for 97 yards and one touchdown, and Jace Rindahl led the defense with nine tackles and one interception.
NOTABLE
- Since the start of the 2004 season, UW-Whitewater is 43-4 in regular season non-conference games, good for a .915 winning percentage. Two of those losses came during the 2017 season and another came against Division II St. Cloud State (2007).
- The Warhawks recorded two interceptions last Saturday at Concordia-Moorhead, the team's fourth multi-interception game in its last five dating back to last season. Over that span, the team owns 12 interceptions and has held its opponents to 200 or fewer passing yards four times. Defensive back Mark McGrath (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) has registered four picks, and graduated DBs Bailey Breunig (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and Famus Hasty (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) tallied two apiece.
