UW-Whitewater Claims WIAC Title Outright With Sweep

The No. 16 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team finished the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season with two victories over UW-Stevens Point in a doubleheader at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

With the wins, the Warhawks (30-9 overall, 21-3 WIAC) clinched the WIAC championship outright and will host next weekend's four-team conference tournament.

UW-Whitewater topped the Pointers 13-3 in seven innings in the opener before posting an 8-2 triumph in the nightcap.

In Game 1, senior Michael Kaska (Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) pitched all seven innings, striking out 10 against only one walk to improve to 5-3 on the year.

Sophomore shortstop Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) and freshman left fielder Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) posted three hits apiece. Santoro scored two runs and added two runs batted in, and Korman knocked in three runs.

Senior catcher Mike Aiello (Racine, Wis./Horlick) registered two hits, including one home run, as well as two runs scored and two RBI. Senior second baseman Nick Schrader (Cambridge, Wis./Jefferson) contributed two hits, two runs scored and two RBI.

Senior third baseman Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) finished 2-for-5 with a two-run home run, two runs scored and two RBI. Aldridge is now one hit shy of tying the program's career record, and two home runs short of the team record total.

The Warhawks scored 10 of their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, when they collected nine hits. Korman delivered the biggest hit with a two-out, three-run double to right.

In Game 2, UW-Stevens Point (14-24, 6-18) led 2-1 through after 6 1/2 before UW-Whitewater rallied for six runs in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Korman, a two-run single by junior right fielder Alex Doud (Waukesha, Wis./Mukwonago), a bunt by Santoro and a two-run single to right by junior Lucas Price (Spring Green, Wis./River Valley).

Sophomore Matt O'Sullivan (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) improved to 7-3 with the complete-game victory, striking out eight while allowing only three hits over nine innings.

Santoro and Doud tallied two hits apiece, and Schrader reached base three times with one hit and two walks. Aldridge drew three walks.

UW-Whitewater closes the regular season Sunday at 1 p.m. against Concordia Wisconsin.
