Muir Pitches Gem as Baseball Advances in WIAC Championship

Westin Muir (St. Charles, Ill./North) pitched seven innings and gave up just three hits to lead the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team to a 6-1 victory over UW-Stout Friday afternoon in the WIAC Championship at Prucha Field at Miller Stadium in Whitewater.

Muir started hot, striking out three of the first five batters he faced. He didn't give up a hit until the top of the fourth, but followed by getting the next batter to roll up into a double-play.

Stout had two on with one out in the sixth, but Muir came through again by striking out the final two batters of the inning. He finished with nine strikeouts, a number he has reached two other times this season. He had a season-high 15 strikeouts against UW-Stout back on April 15.

Nick Reitz came on to pitch a perfect eighth for UW-W and Evan Sigmund (Oconto Falls, Wis./Oconto Falls) closed the game out in the ninth after surrendering one run.

Five different players collected an RBI in the game and the Warhaws racked up 13 hits in the affair.

Noah Jensen (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) led the way with a 3-for-5 performance and one run batted in. Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley), Nick Schrader (Cambridge, Wis./Jefferson) and Mike Aiello (Racine, Wis./Horlick) each chipped in a pair of hits.

UW-W, 32-9, will play again at 7 p.m. against UW-La Crosse. The tournament uses a double-elimination format.
