The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team won its opener before falling in a rain-shortened second game Sunday during a non-conference doubleheader at Carroll.
The Warhawks (12-6 overall) shut out the Pioneers 6-0 in the first game, but were limited offensively in the second game, a 3-1 loss, which was cut to 4 1/2 innings due to inclement weather.
In Game 1, junior third baseman
Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) hit a homer to start scoring and finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in to lead the offense.
Senior shortstop
Emily Rux (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) doubled in a run to double the UW-Whitewater lead in the fifth, and senior designated player
Molly Ethington (Rock Island, Ill./Alleman Catholic) added to the lead with a base hit in the sixth.
The Warhawks broke open a close game in the seventh with three more runs on a two-run triple by senior
Kayla Seymour (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) and an RBI single by Cohrs.
Junior
Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) tossed a complete-game shutout to improve to 6-1 on the season. She allowed only five hits and one walk while striking out nine over the seven-inning performance.
In Game 2, Carroll (15-10) took the lead for good in the bottom of the second with two runs, and added another in the fourth.
Rux plated UW-Whitewater's lone run in the top of the first on a single that plated sophomore right fielder
Kaiden Jackson (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg).
Junior
Dani Biesiada (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) took her first loss of the season to drop to 2-1. She allowed four hits in four innings while striking out a pair.
The Warhawks left five runners on base in the contest, including two in the top of the first.
UW-Whitewater returns to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this Wednesday at UW-Oshkosh. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
