Softball Splits Pair at UW-Oshkosh

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team won the first game before falling in the second game Tuesday at UW-Oshkosh in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The Warhawks (13-7 overall, 3-1 WIAC) shut out the Titans 5-0 in the opener before being edged 5-4 in the nightcap.

In Game 1, junior Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) tossed her second straight shutout, allowing only one hit and two walks while striking out 10 in seven innings. She pushed her record to 7-1 with the win.

UW-Whitewater used a five-run fifth inning to account for all its scoring. Senior designated player Kayla Seymour (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) provided what proved to be the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly. Senior centerfielder Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) knocked a two-out, two-run double down the left field line for a 3-0 advantage, and junior catcher Nicole Neitzel (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) and sophomore right fielder Kaiden Jackson (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) provided run-scoring singles later in the frame.

The Titans (13-9, 2-2) posted their lone hit off Matthias with one out in the bottom of the fifth.

Jackson and senior first baseman Molly Ethington (Rock Island, Ill./Alleman Catholic) each tallied two hits to lead the Warhawks.

In Game 2, UW-Whitewater grabbed a 2-0 advantage with one run each in the first and second innings, but UW-Oshkosh plated one in the fourth before taking the lead for good with four in the bottom of the fifth.

The Warhawks drew to within one on a two-run homer in the sixth by junior catcher Nikki Mikosz (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling), but left two on base in the inning and another in the seventh.

Seymour and junior shortstop Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) collected three hits apiece. Seymour and Ethington also contributed RBIs.

Senior Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) took the loss to drop to 4-5 on the season, tossing the first 4 2/3 innings. Junior Dani Biesiada (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) allowed only one hit over the final 1 1/3 frames.

UW-Whitewater returns to action Thursday against Concordia Wisconsin. First pitch of the doubleheader at van Steenderen Softball Complex is slated for 3 p.m.
