The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team earned a sweep of the University of Chicago Saturday in their first two home games of the season.
UW-W is now 11-5 overall after posting a 10-2, five-inning victory in game one, and a 9-1, five-inning triumph in game two.
The Warhawks sped out to a 5-2 lead after three innings in game one, highlighted by a three run third that included a
Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) triple, a
Nicole Neitzel (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) double and a
Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) single.
Two innings later, UW-W notched five more runs. The first run of the inning came on a bases loaded wild pitch. The second on a pop-up, the third on another wild pitch, and the last two on a walk-off double by
Sam Lattner (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township). Lattner entered the game in the top half of the inning as a defensive substitution.
Game two started with a bang as the Warhawks drove in six runs on three hits in the opening frame. Doubles by
Kaleigh O'Brien (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and
Kelly Berglund (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls)Â highlighted the inning.
The Maroons got one back in the top of the fourth on a solo homer, but UW-W got that run back, and another, in the bottom half of the inning to take an 8-2 lead after four.
O'Brien doubled again in the bottom of the fifth and was lifted for pinch runner
Alexa Blasczyk (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon). Blasczyk came around to score the final run one batter later on a double by pinch hitter
Megan Schetter (Manitowoc, Wis./Lutheran).
Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) tossed all five innings for the Warhawks in game one, and
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) did the same in game two. Matthias posted six strikeouts while Camardo added one more.
Emily Rux (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) and
Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) college three hits apiece in the doubleheader to lead the Warhawks in hits at the plate, but five different players posted two RBIs each:
Sam Lattner (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township),
Nicole Neitzel (Verona, Wis./Verona Area),
Nikki Mikosz (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling),
Mattie Klingenmeyer (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) and
Kaleigh O'Brien (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge).

UW-W will travel to Carroll University on Sunday for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.
