No. 18 UW-W Baseball Splits at UW-La Crosse

The No. 18 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team maintained its two-game lead in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings Sunday with a doubleheader split at UW-La Crosse.

The Warhawks (24-7 overall, 16-2 WIAC) topped the Eagles 14-3 in seven innings in the first game, and were edged 11-10 in the nightcap.

In Game 1, the Warhawks broke open a three-run game with eight in the top of the sixth inning, and senior third baseman Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) knocked three home runs for the first time in his career.

Sophomore shortstop Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) collected two hits, including one triple, and recorded five RBI. Senior second baseman Nick Schrader (Cambridge, Wis./Jefferson) reached base four times with one hit and three walks and added two RBI, and junior first baseman Lucas Price (Spring Green, Wis./River Valley) and freshman left fielder Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) each knocked in one run.

Sophomore pitcher Westin Muir (St. Charles, Ill./North) improved to 5-0 with a complete-game performance, allowing three runs and striking out seven over seven innings of work.

Aldridge's first homer of the contest put UW-Whitewater ahead 1-0 in the top of the first, and Santoro's three-run triple made it a 4-0 advantage in the second.

After the Eagles (19-11, 14-4) plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Warhawks responded with two in the fifth on a two-run homer by Aldridge to make it 6-3.

UW-Whitewater tallied five hits, drew three walks and was hit by three pitches during their eight-run sixth. Aldridge posted his third homer of the game, a two-run shot to right center, after Schrader singled home a pair of runs.

In a wild Game 2, the Warhawks held a 10-7 lead through seven, but UW-La Crosse scored three in the eighth to tie the game before walking off in the ninth on a sacrifice fly.

The two teams combined for 37 hits and 20 runners left on base.

Santoro, senior catcher Mike Aiello (Racine, Wis./Horlick) and sophomore designated hitter Connor Moroder (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) finished with three hits apiece.
