The No. 22 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team swept a pair of games without allowing a run Saturday afternoon in its home-opening doubleheader against St. Scholastica (Minn.) at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.
The Warhawks (7-5 overall) posted a 2-0 triumph to start the day before emerging with a 5-0 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, senior
Michael Kaska (Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) tossed a four-hit shutout and collected 17 strikeouts, second-most in one game in program history. He stranded 10 baserunners in the outing and improved to 2-2 on the season with the win.
Senior centerfielder
Alex Doud (Waukesha, Wis./Mukwonago) broke open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth with a one-out base hit through the right side to plate senior third baseman
Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) from third. UW-Whitewater doubled its lead in the seventh, when freshman designated hitter
Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) plated junior first baseman
Ben Wilkins (Sussex, Wis./Lake Country Lutheran) with a single through the right side.
The Saints (5-7) left the bases loaded in the second and stranded two runners in the fifth, and Kaska stranded 10 runners on base for the game.
Doud, Wilkins and sophomore shortstop
Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) tallied two hits apiece to lead the offense.
In Game 2, the Warhawks scored twice in the second and once in the third to take an early lead and didn't look back thanks to another strong pitching performance.
Sophomore
Matt O'Sullivan (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) allowed only four hits and struck out five over 7 2/3 innings, improving to 1-2 on the year. After O'Sullivan ran into trouble in the eighth, junior
Riley Gruetzmacher (Oconto Falls, Wis./Oconto Falls) recorded the final out of the inning and retired the side in order in the ninth to complete the shutout.
Santoro, Korman and senior second baseman
Nick Schrader (Cambridge, Wis./Jefferson) registered two hits apiece. Santoro knocked in a pair of runs, and Korman scored twice.
Santoro started the scoring in the second on a two-out, two-run triple to right center. Sophomore right fielder
Bryan Sturdevant (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) added to the lead in the third with a sacrifice fly.
Korman and Wilkins scored on a St. Scholastica error in the sixth to make it a five-run advantage.
