AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The No. 15 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team mashed 17 hits Sunday to earn its second straight win, a 14-4 victory over Kalamazoo (Mich.) at the RussMatt Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park.
The game was called after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
Seven players finished with multiple hits for the Warhawks (3-4 overall), who jumped out to an early lead and didn't look back.
Junior pitcher
Riley Gruetzmacher (Oconto Falls, Wis./Oconto Falls) picked up his first win of the year, allowing only three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four in six innings of work. Junior
Larkin Hanselmann (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) tossed the final inning in relief.
Senior second baseman
Nick Schrader (Cambridge, Wis./Jefferson) tallied three hits, four runs scored and two runs batted in, and senior third baseman
Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) registered three hits, including two doubles, to go along with one run scored and three RBIs.
Junior centerfielder
Alex Doud (Waukesha, Wis./Mukwonago) collected two hits, one run scored and two RBIs, and sophomore right fielder
Bryan Sturdevant (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) contributed two hits, one run scored and one RBI. Junior first baseman
Ben Wilkins (Sussex, Wis./Lake Country Lutheran), freshman left fielder
Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) and freshman designated hitter
Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) finished with two hits apiece. Wilkins scored twice, and Korman scored three times.
Aldridge opened scoring in the bottom of the first with a run-scoring double, and senior catcher
Mike Aiello (Racine, Wis./Horlick) made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.
After the Hornets (1-3) halved their deficit in the top of the second, UW-Whitewater responded in the bottom half with three runs on an RBI fielder's choice by sophomore shortstop
Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley), a run-scoring single by Aldridge and an RBI base hit by Doud.
The Warhawks added two in the fourth and two in the fifth, and plated five runs in the seventh.
UW-Whitewater returns to action Monday in Auburndale with games against Middlebury (Vt.) and Franklin (Ind.) at 8:45 a.m. Central Time and 12:15 p.m. Central Time, respectively.
