The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team clinched the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship title with a 4-1 win over UW-La Crosse in Saturday's final at Fiskum Field.
The team was seeded first heading into the tournament with a 5-1-1 WIAC record during the regular season. The Warhawks have now earned five WIAC Tournament championships and have swept the regular season and tournament titles four times.
With the win, UW-W receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship, which begins next week, and will learn its first-round opponent and destination during Monday's Selection Show at 12 p.m. Central Time on
NCAA.com.
The Warhawks improve to 14-5-3 on the season, while the Eagles drop to 12-7-3.
UW-W attacked first in the game, scoring in the third minute.
Olivia May's (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) shot on goal forced the goalie to dive for the save, and
Elli Wahlberg (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) used the deflected shot get the ball into the lower left corner of the net.
UW-La Crosse answered back in the 22nd minute when they were able to get past the defenders and force
Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) out of the box to score in the lower half of the box.
In the 31st minute, Whitewater was able to take back the lead when
Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) scored in the lower left of the goal with an assist from
Anna Brodjian (Barrington, Ill./Barrington).
Both teams offenses worked hard as possession was constantly changing early in the second half. In the 59th minute, the Warhawks were awarded a corner kick. Boyd took the opportunity and was able to find Brodjian in the mix of players. She was able to find a gap and put the Warhawks up 3-1.
Boyd found the ball around mid-field in the 82nd and was able to outrun all of the defenders to score her second goal of the game, and UW-W's fourth. The game ended with a 4-1 score in favor of the Warhawks.
