Trailing 10-0 midway through the third quarter, the Warhawks recorded 21 points from that point on, including 14 in the fourth quarter, for a 21-17 victory over UW-La Crosse, which was receiving votes in both national polls. UW-Whitewater rushed for 207 yards and limited the Eagles to 71 yards on the ground. The Warhawks stopped UW-La Crosse in the red zone with less than five minutes to play and ran out the clock to hang on for the win.

The Warhawks remained at No. 3 in the D3football.com Top 25, earning 575 points from pollsters, and at No. 3 in the American Football Coaches Association Division III Coaches Poll, garnering 1,197 points. UW-Whitewater trails only Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas), No. 1 in the AFCA poll, and Mount Union (Ohio), No. 1 in D3football.com's Top 25, in both polls. The Warhawks were ranked fourth by Lindy's, Street & Smith and D3football.com entering the new season.

UW-Stout, which has lost only one conference game by more than six points, claimed its second straight win last Saturday, defeating UW-River Falls 30-24 in Menomonie. The Blue Devils broke a 24-24 tie with a touchdown at the 2:17 mark of the fourth quarter. Sean Borderding threw three touchdown passes to lead UW-Stout offensively, and Kierre Rhodes and Luke Wilz posted eight tackles apiece to lead the defense.

SERIES

UW-Whitewater has won 17 straight games against UW-Stout, which last claimed victory in 2002. Last season, the Warhawks piled up 354 rushing yards at 9.3 yards per carry and forced three turnovers on their way to a 40-10 triumph on Oct. 27, 2018, in Menomonie. Alex Peete (Ringwood, Ill./Johnsburg) ran for 154 yards and three touchdowns to lead the offense. Jacob Erbs (Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg) paced the defense with nine tackles and one forced fumble.

The Warhawks are No. 1 in the first edition of the NCAA West Region Rankings, which were released earlier this week.
