The Warhawks turned a pair of fumble recoveries in the third quarter into 14 points last Saturday on their way to a 24-14 victory over UW-Eau Claire at Perkins Stadium. UW-Whitewater held the Blugolds to 3-of-14 on third-down conversions and held the ball for more than 17 minutes in the second half to maintain their lead.
The Warhawks remained at No. 3 in the D3football.com Top 25, earning 566 points from pollsters, and at No. 3 in the American Football Coaches Association Division III Coaches Poll, garnering 1,184 points. UW-Whitewater trails only No. 1 Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) and No. 2 Mount Union (Ohio) in both polls. The Warhawks were ranked fourth by Lindy's, Street & Smith and D3football.com entering the new season.
UW-Platteville, which was picked to finish fourth in the WIAC in a preseason poll, downed then-No. 16 UW-La Crosse 38-20 last Saturday in Platteville. The Pioneers trailed 20-7 before scoring 31 unanswered points, including 17 in the third quarter alone. UW-Platteville collected six interceptions in the contest and outgained the Eagles 379-355. Colin Schuetz threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns, and Tyler Reinhardt registered 11 tackles to lead the Pioneers.
SERIES
UW-Whitewater leads the all-time series against UW-Platteville, 83-24-4, and has won the last 14 meetings between the two teams. Last season, the Warhawks recorded 35 first-half points on their way to a 49-21 triumph on Nov. 10, 2018, in Platteville. UW-Whitewater held the Pioneers to 25 yards rushing on 31 carries and totaled six sacks, and Cole Wilber (Mission Viejo, Calif./Dana Hills) and Zach Oles (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) combined for four touchdown passes to lead the offense.
NOTABLE
The George Chryst Memorial Bowl is named after former UW-Platteville head coach George Chryst, who passed away suddenly in 1992 after leading the Pioneers to a 79-60-2 record and the 1980 conference championship. The rivalry game was dedicated in 1995 and the Miner's Axe became the rivalry trophy. Following the game, Chryst's wife, Patty, will present the winning team with the Axe and recognize the Offensive and Defensive Most Valuable players from each team. The Warhawks have won 22 of the 24 George Chryst Bowl games. UW-Platteville claimed the Axe in 2001 and 2004.
