Women's Soccer Edged at UW-Eau Claire

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team held a lead in the first half but was unable to sustain it Saturday in a 3-2 setback at UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.

The Warhawks (6-5-1 overall, 0-1 WIAC) out-shot the Blugolds 13-8 and held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-Eau Claire (5-4, 2-0) took the lead for good in the 52nd minute and withstood four UW-Whitewater shots on goal over the next 18 minutes of action.

Sophomore defender Katy Kusswurm (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) hit the post in the 72nd minute, and two more shots by the Warhawks over the next 10 minutes sailed wide.

Sophomore midfielder Anna Brodjian (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) put a shot on net in the 83rd, but was turned away. UW-Whitewater had one more corner kick with one minute, 35 seconds to go in the contest, but was unable to find a game-tying tally.

The Blugolds took the lead in the 19th minute, but the Warhawks responded 45 seconds later as sophomore forward Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) collected her team-leading fourth goal of the season to level the match.

After a missed penalty kick, one other shot on goal and four corner kicks, freshman forward Savannah Curtis (Lodi, Wis./Lodi) put UW-Whitewater ahead in the 42nd minute.

The lead was short-lived as UW-Eau Claire tallied 20 seconds later to tie the match at 2-2 heading into halftime.

The Warhawks earned a corner kick one minute into the second half, but the Blugolds pressured UW-Whitewater over the next five minutes to set up the go-ahead goal.

Junior goalkeeper Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) compiled two saves. Brodjian and Boyd posted three shots each, and senior defender Payton DeLuga (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) registered two shots, both on goal.

UW-Whitewater returns home Wednesday to face UW-Oshkosh. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Fiskum Field.
