A goal in the 75th minute provided all of the offense the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team needed to earn their first home win. The Warhawks, 2-3-1, defeated Concordia-Wisconsin 1-0 Saturday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
Â
Sophomore midfielder
Steven Wright (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) had a good opportunity in the 17th minute when he gathered a loose ball at the top of the 18, but his left-footed rocket hit the crossbar.
Â
Concordia didn't get many opportunities, but when they did
Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) was ready. King, a freshman goalkeeper making his first start, made a diving save to his right on a laser beam of a shot by Concordia in the 26th minute.
Â
The Falcons had a chance early in the second half on a hotly contested breakaway, but a shot to the far post drifted just right of the net.
Â
UW-W earned a corner in the 75th minute that senior captain
Kyle Clancy (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) launched into the box.
Jake Santellano (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) rose above everyone else and headed it in for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 Warhawk lead.
Â
One last ditched effort by the Falcons from about 20 yards out glanced off the crossbar and out of play.
Â
King totaled two saves in the match to earn his first collegiate shutout and win.
Â
UW-W will take a few days off before their next match, which is the start of a four-game road trip. Next up, the Warhawks will travel to Fulton, Missouri to take on Westminster at 7 p.m. on September 21. After that the Warhawks will play three more road games before returning for an eight-game home stand.
