The No. 1 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team defeated Texas-Tyler, 8-2, on its second day at the NCAA Central Regional at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill., Saturday afternoon.
With Saturday's victory, UW-Whitewater, the No. 2 seed in the regional, advances to face the No. 4 seed, Rhodes, Sunday at 10 a.m. Rhodes downed top-seeded Webster 6-4 on Saturday.
The Warhawks (33-6) posted 11 hits and held the Patriots to just seven hits and eight players left on base for Texas-Tyler.
Junior pitcher
Michael Kaska (Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) tossed the first 2 2/3 innings and recorded two strikeouts. Senior pitcher
Austin Jones (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) tossed the next 5 1/3 frames and recorded the win to make his season record, 8-2,while adding five strikeouts. Freshman pitcher
Matt O'Sullivan (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) finished out the game and tallied two strikeouts.
Senior
Daytona Bryden (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) posted two hits, including a home run, recorded two runs and registered three runs batted in. He also tied the program record for career stolen bases (80) with his 28th of the year. Junior infielder
Nick Schrader (Cambridge, Wis./Jefferson) and junior designated hitter
Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) added two hits and one RBI apiece for UW-Whitewater.
With two outs in the second inning, Bryden homered to right center and collected three RBIs to make the score 3-0.
Senior first baseman
Blake Fleischman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) scored in the third inning when freshman third baseman
Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) grounded out to the shortstop and freshman outfielder
Alex Doud (Waukesha, Wis./Mukwonago) advanced to third.
A wild pitch from Texas-Tyler (30-17) resulted in a run for Doud and the Warhawks.
The Patriots responded with a run in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-1.
UW-Whitewater collected three hits and one run in the fourth inning, including a double from Schrader that sent Bryden home.
The Warhawks collected two runs in the sixth inning. Junior
Connor Schneider (Wheaton, Ill./Prairie Ridge) scored on a wild pitch to account for the final margin of the game.
UW-Whitewater allowed zero hits from the Patriots in four innings throughout the game and didn't commit an error to help secure the victory.
