No. 3 Warhawks Extend Win Streak to Six

The No. 3 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team remained unbeaten in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Saturday with a pair of double-digit wins over UW-Stout on a chilly day at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

The Warhawks secured a 14-4 victory in the opener in walkoff fashion, and compiled an 11-1 triumph in the nightcap to push their winning streak to six games. Both games were called after seven innings due to 10-run rule.

In Game 1, the Warhawks pounded out 17 hits and scored in each one of their at-bats. Senior centerfielder Daytona Bryden (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) led the team with four hits, two runs scored and four runs batted in.

Senior first baseman Blake Fleischman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) and junior shortstop Nick Schrader (Cambridge, Wis./Jefferson) collected three hits apiece. Schrader plated two runs, and Fleischman knocked in one. Freshman third baseman Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) registered two hits, two runs scored and two RBI.

Senior Austin Jones (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) pitched six innings and allowed three earned runs while striking out eight. Sophomore Riley Gruetzmacher (Oconto Falls, Wis./Oconto Falls) tossed a scoreless seventh inning in relief.

Schrader singled home Bryden in the bottom of the first to give UW-Whitewater an early lead before the Blue Devils took the lead in the top of the second.

The Warhawks took the lead for good in the bottom of the second as Bryden, Schrader and junior designated hitter Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) recorded run-scoring hits. The team plated two more in the third, two more in the fourth and two more in the fifth until UW-Stout plated two in the top of the sixth to draw within 11-4.

Bryden doubled to plate senior second baseman Jeff Szubert (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew) in the bottom of the sixth to make it 12-4. Santoro singled home Fleischman and sophomore Noah Jensen (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper), pinch running for Santoro, stole a pair of bases and scored on an error to end the game via run rule.

In the second game, UW-Whitewater jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in the contest. Aldridge (first inning) and Fleischman (third) started the scoring with RBI groundouts, and Santoro doubled home sophomore right fielder Trevor Cho (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) to give the team a 3-0 advantage in the third.

The Blue Devils got one back in the fourth, but the Warhawks responded quickly in the bottom half of the frame on RBIs from Bryden and Schrader. In the fifth, senior catcher Mike Aiello (Racine, Wis./Horlick) scored Cho on a sacrifice fly, and junior left fielder Matt Wary (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) plated Santoro with a run-scoring single to make it 7-1.
