The No. 2 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team defeated No. 16 UW-Oshkosh, 8-7, and fell, 6-2, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.
Despite five errors from the Warhawks in the first game, a home run from sophomore outfielder
Alex Doud (Waukesha, Wis./Mukwonago) that sent two runners in and an error by the Titans in the sixth inning tied the game and another UW-Oshkosh miscue in the eighth inning gave UW-Whitewater its first lead of the game since the first inning.
Senior pitcher
Austin Jones (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) tossed the first 5 2/3 innings and recorded four strikeouts. Junior pitcher
Michael Kaska (Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief and registered the victory, making his season record 4-1. Sophomore
Riley Gruetzmacher (Oconto Falls, Wis./Oconto Falls) tossed a perfect ninth inning for his third save of the year, registering one strikeout.
Senior
Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) recorded two hits, including a game-tying homer in the eighth, and added two runs scored and three runs batted in. Doud tallied two hits, one run and two RBI, and senior outfielder
Brett Krause (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) posted two hits.
The Warhawks (15-3 overall, 7-1 WIAC) scored early in the first game after a sacrifice fly from senior third baseman
Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) sent senior centerfielder
Daytona Bryden (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) to the plate.
UW-Whitewater remained scoreless for the next five innings, while UW-Oshkosh scored four in the second inning, including a triple that sent three runners home.
Despite the Titans (13-3, 1-1) posting two more runs in the top of the sixth, the Warhawks rallied and responded with a five-run inning, including a homer from Doud and a single from Aldridge that registered two RBI.
UW-Oshkosh scored off of a UW-Whitewater error in the top of the eighth, but the Warhawks took the lead back when senior first baseman
Blake Fleischman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) scored on an error from the Titans to account for the final margin.
In the second game, senior pitcher
Heath Renz (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) tossed the first 6 2/3 innings, taking the loss to make his season record 3-1. He recorded six strikeouts in the performance. Junior
Sam Heilenbach (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) tossed the 1 1/3 frames for the Warhawks, and freshman
Matt O'Sullivan (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) finished the contest.
Krause posted two hits and one RBI, and Aldridge tallied one hit, one run and one RBI.
The Titans out-hit the Warhawks, 9-5, and UW-Whitewater did not register its first hit of the game until the fifth inning.
In the seventh inning, Krause singled and plated Aldridge, and junior shortstop
Nick Schrader (Cambridge, Wis./Jefferson) tallied a run after Aldridge doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the ninth.
The Warhawks continue WIAC play Saturday, April 14, at UW-La Crosse with a doubleheader that begins at 12 p.m.
