Volk Records 600th Win as Warhawks Take Two

The No. 18 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team downed Middlebury, 2-0, and Mount St. Vincent, 8-0, on Wednesday in Clermont, Fla.

Coach Brenda Volk tallied her 600th victory against Middlebury. She is the 34th coach in NCAA Division III history to reach the milestone and the 20th active coach to reach the 600-win plateau.

Volk is in her 20th season as the head coach for the Warhawks with a record of 600-242-4 and has made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, including NCAA Division III National runner-up in 2008 and and NCAA Division III third place in 2014.  She has led the Warhawks to six Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships and seven WIAC Tournament titles.

In the first game, junior Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) tossed a complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts and earned the win, improving her season record to 4-0.

Sophomore outfielder Megan Schweitzer (Appleton, Wis./East) registered two hits and sophomore catcher Nicole Neitzel (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) tallied two hits.

Middlebury (6-3) and the Warhawks tallied only one hit a piece for the first five innings.

A single from sophomore first basement Mattie Klingenmeyer (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) sent Klotz in to score in the sixth inning, and a triple from Camardo plated Klingenmeyer to account for the final margin of the game.

In the second game, UW-Whitewater forced the game to end in the fifth inning by run rule.

Sophomore pitcher Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) tossed the first four innings with seven strikeouts and earned the victory, pushing her season record 2-3. Freshman pitcher Makena Creekmore (Beach Park, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) came in to finish out the game and posted two strikeouts.

Junior shortstop Emily Rux (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) posted three runs batted in and scored one run. Junior second basemen Kelly Berglund (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) recorded two runs, one hit and one RBI.

UW-Whitewater (7-5) recorded five hits and five runs in the third inning.

A double from Rux sent in three runners for the Warhawks. Junior third baseman Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) registered a double on the next play and sent Rux home.

In the fourth inning, a double from Berglund sent sophomore outfielder Sam Lattner (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) in for a run.

UW-Whitewater held Mount Saint Vincent (5-3) to just one hit in the game and the Warhawks recorded eight hits.
