Warhawks Conclude Spring Break Trip

The No. 18 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team fell to No. 9 Luther, 8-3, and St. Olaf, 2-0, to wrap up play at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Fla., on Thursday.

In the first game, junior Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) pitched the first four innings and took her first loss of the season, dropping to 4-1. Sophomore Dani Biesiada (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) came in to toss the next 1 2/3 innings, and freshman Makena Creekmore (Beach Park, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) finished the game out for the Warhawks.

Sophomore outfielder Megan Schweitzer (Appleton, Wis./East) recorded two hits and a run, and Camardo posted two hits.

UW-Whitewater took the early lead in the third inning at 1-0 when junior short stop Emily Rux (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) singled to bring in Schweitzer, but Luther responded in the bottom of the inning with five runs.

The Warhawks cut their deficit to three with a pair of runs in the sixth on a double by freshman Kaleigh O'Brien (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and on a hit by pitch from freshman Kaiden Jackson (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg).

The Norse (16-1) got the two runs back in the bottom half of the frame and maintained their lead.

UW-Whitewater left 10 runners on base, including at least one in every inning.

Against St. Olaf (10-6), the Warhawks were limited to just one hit in the contest.

Sophomore pitcher Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) pitched the entire game to account for the loss, which makes her season record 2-4, and registered eight strikeouts.

Shortstop Kelly Berglund (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) registered a hit for UW-Whitewater (7-7).

The Warhawks visit Dubuque (Iowa) for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
