The No. 10 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team fell to Kalamazoo, 3-2, and Williams, 5-3, in Clermont, Fla., on Tuesday.
The first game was forced into the eighth inning after a tie, 2-2, at the end of the seventh, but Kalamazoo (8-7) scored to end the game after a runner was placed on second to start the eighth inning by international rules.
The Warhawks (5-5) out-hit Kalamazoo, 10-8, but left 10 runners on base.
Freshman pitcher
Sarah Hutchinson (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) tossed the first three innings and sophomore
Dani Biesiada (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North), who dropped to 0-1 for the season, tossed the last four and tallied four strikeouts.
Junior short stop
Emily Rux (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) registered two hits and two runs batted in. Biesiada and sophomore third basemen
Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) each tallied two hits.
After Kalamazoo scoring two runs in the first inning, the Warhawks held them scoreless for the next six innings.
A double from Rux in the third sent senior outfielder
Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) in for the run to make the score 2-2.
Both teams were held scoreless for the next four innings before Kalamazoo tallied a run off a single in the eighth to end the game.
In the second game, sophomore
Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) tossed the first four innings and recorded the loss, and junior
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) finished off the final three.
Sophomore
Megan Schweitzer (Appleton, Wis./East) recorded two hits and a run in the game, and Klotz collected two hits.
UW-Whitewater registered five hits and two runs in the first two innings of the game.
The Warhawks kept Williams (12-3) scoreless for the first two innings, but the Ephs came back and scored five runs in the next three.
UW-Whitewater loaded the bases in the seventh with a run already in, but was unable to extend the contest.
The Warhawks continue play Wednesday against Middlebury (Vt.) at 8 a.m. Central Time and Mount Saint Vincent (N.Y.) at 10:30 a.m. CT.
