University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football sophomore kicker
Wojciech Gasienica (Norridge, Ill./Ridgewood) has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top place kicker among Football Championship Subdivision, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA and NJCAA institutions.
Gasienica is one of three finalists from Division III schools and the lone sophomore among the group of 10. A total of 40 candidates were considered.
The winner of the Mitchell Award will be announced Dec. 10 and will be honored Feb. 18, 2019, at the National Football Foundation Chicago Chapter Awards Ceremony.
Gasienica has made 16-of-21 field goals this season, good for a 76.2 percent clip. He has converted 66-of-70 extra points and ranks second on the team in scoring with 114 total points.
Through games of Nov. 24, Gasienica ranked 10th in NCAA Division III in field goals per game, 26th in field goal percentage and 28th in total points scored.
Gasienica was named honorable mention All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in November after helping the Warhawks claim their 36th conference championship and 15th appearance in the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
Off the field, Gasienica volunteers with the team through Fairhaven Senior Services, Special Olympics and the annual food drive to benefit Whitewater Food Pantry. He also serves as a volunteer coach during summers at his alma mater, Ridgewood High School, where he was also actively engaged as a volunteer before coming to UW-Whitewater.
UW-Whitewater, ranked fourth in the American Football Coaches Association Top 25 and fifth in the D3football.com Top 25, visits consensus No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the national semifinals.
