No. 18 Volleyball Falls at No. 1 Calvin in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team concluded play in the NCAA Tournament Friday night.

The No. 18 Warhawks (25-8) took on No. 1 Calvin (30-1), the host of the Grand Rapids, Michigan Regional, and lost the rematch in a 25-23, 25-18, 28-30, 25-17 affair.

In the first set, a 12-6 Calvin run left the Warhawks down late.  An 8-3 run put the Warhawks on top 23-22, but a 3-0 Calvin run put the set out of reach 25-22.  The Warhawks battled hard into the second set, keeping pace with the number one team in the nation 11-11.  Calvin went on a 9-3 run to pull ahead 20-14, and the Warhawks found themselves unable to catch up in the 25-18 set.

In the third set, the Warhawks kept close with Calvin, the set tied at 17 later on.  The Warhawks clawed out the slimmest of edges and battled back and forth with Calvin to stake their claim in a 30-28 set to stay alive.  The Warhawks were down 7-2 early in the fourth and struggled to come back.   A late 6-1 set gave the Warhawks some life but it wasn't enough and they fell 25-17.

Freshmen setters KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) and Paige Manssen (Bull Valley, Ill./McHenry West) had 20 and 17 assists, respectively.  Senior libero Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) posted 40 digs to cap her impressive career as the program's all time leader in digs (2,666).

Senior middle hitter Kelley Berk (Cedarburg, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) had 14 kills and four blocks in her final game as a Warhawk.  Freshman outside hitter Emma Aske (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) had 13 kills and 16 digs for a double-double.  Freshman outside hitter Erin McNeil (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) had 11 kills.

Junior middle hitter Ashton Doll (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) posted four blocks, while junior outside hitter Rachel Butterfield (Milton, Wis./Milton) had five of her own.

Robinson was named to the NCAA Grand Rapids, Michigan Regional All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of play.

UW-Whitewater completed its 30th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Berk, Robinson and fellow seniors Elizabeth Niestrom (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) and Amanda Spera (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) helped the Warhawks claim one WIAC regular season championship, two conference tournament titles and three berths in the NCAA Tournament.
