The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swimming and diving teams started competition Thursday at the three-day Carthage Classic in Kenosha.
The Warhawks claimed three of Thursday's four events, including the 800-yard freestyle men's and women's relays.
Junior
Shayna Putney (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower), sophomore
Olivia Theobald (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap), senior
Erin Hawker (Chanhassen, Minn./Hutchinson) and junior
Bailey Weston (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) teamed up to win the relay race in 7:54.45, out-touching Carthage's group by 1.5 seconds.
The men claimed top honors in the same race as sophomores
Jake Herlache (West Bend, Wis./Grafton),
Jordan Kreitzman (Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King), freshman
Tristan Whiting (Hayden, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy) and senior
Chandler Lewis (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) posted a time of 7:02.29, nearly three seconds faster than Carthage's top foursome.
Theobald topped a field of 31 swimmers in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 18:01.70, more than 27 seconds faster than the runner-up. Junior
Meredith Gustafson (Brookfield, Wis./East) and sophomore
Skyler Budny (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) also finished among the top five with times of 18:38.36 and 18:44.55, respectively.
Sophomore
Zach Noll (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) placed third in the 1,650 free in 16:38.54. Whiting placed eighth in 16:53.58.
Competition resumes Friday with preliminaries at 9 a.m.
