The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team enters the new season with a mix of returners of newcomers. After a promising start and a premature end to last year, it hopes to compete for a conference championship in 2018-19.
The Warhawks finished 16-10 last season and reached the first round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 6-8 record. They were ranked as high as No. 2 in the D3hoops.com poll before the end of their season.
UW-Whitewater is predicted to finish fourth in the WIAC and is ranked 24th in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25 heading into the team's season opener against Anderson on Tuesday. UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville and UW-Stevens Point are also ranked in the Top 25 heading into the season.
The Warhawks will host No. 25 St. John's (Minn.) on Nov. 17 and Concordia Wisconsin on Nov. 18. They head to Monmouth (Ill.) on Nov. 20 before a three-game home stand against Beloit on Nov. 27, Calvin (Mich.) on Dec. 7 and Alma (Mich.) on Dec. 8.
UW-Whitewater will visit Ripon on Dec. 15 and Loras (Iowa), who is receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25, on Dec. 21. The team will close the non-conference season with a two-day trip to Austin, Texas, on Dec. 28-29. The team will face Sul Ross State (Texas) and Concordia Texas to close the calendar year.
The Warhawks open the 14-game WIAC schedule against UW-Eau Claire at Kachel Gymnasium on Jan. 5.
A returning senior class that includes guards
Andre Brown (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail),
David Sachs (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park),
Mitchell Pfeifer (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine) and
Dalton Menke (Rockford, Ill./Winnebago) and forward
Derek Rongstad (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) leads the Warhawks.
Brown was named first team All-WIAC after starting all 25 games in the season. He led the team in scoring with 15.2 points per game. He also led the team in steals and ranked third in the WIAC, averaging 1.48 per game.
Rongstad was named honorable mention All-WIAC and was also named to the WIAC All-Defensive Team for the second consecutive year. He finished second in the conference in minutes per game (32.31), third in defensive rebounds (128) and sixth in rebounding with 6.1 per game while averaging 10.9 points per contest.
Sachs was also named honorable mention All-WIAC after his first season on the team, collecting 11.3 points per outing. He finished second in the conference in assists (94) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.62-to-1). Sachs was ranked fourth in the WIAC in minutes played per game (31.77) and sixth in free throw percentage (79.2).
Pfeifer (11.9 ppg) ended the season tied for the 14th-most 3-pointers made in one season in program history (57). He finished sixth in the WIAC with 3-pointers made (57 / 2.19 per game) and seventh in 3-point field goal percentage (42.5).
Menke led the team and finished second in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 48.1, which makes him tied for the sixth-highest in one season in program history. He made 50 three-pointers and averaged 8.5 points primarily in a reserve role during his first season with the Warhawks.

Riley Jensen (Milton, Wis./Janesville Craig) and
Noah Kaminski (Hartford, Wis./Hartford Union).
Jensen appeared in 26 games last season, including 14 as a starter, and averaged 4.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. He shot 72.7 percent from the free throw line.
Kaminski played in 13 games, while Spicer Jr. appeared in eight. Williams competed in seven games, and Fox played in six games and shot 50 percent from the 3-point line.
