The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team posted its third victory in the last four matches Saturday to clinch a berth in next week's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 2-0 triumph over UW-River Falls at Fiskum Field.

The Warhawks (9-9-1 overall, 3-4 WIAC) will play in Tuesday's first round of the conference tournament against an opponent to be determined following Saturday's results.

UW-Whitewater posted what proved to be the game-winning goal near the midway point of the first half before the Falcons (9-9-1, 2-5) were able to record a shot.

After back-to-back shots by sophomore midfielder Anna Brodjian (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) were saved, freshman midfielder Carli Nehls (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) found the back of the net in the 21st minute on a corner kick from sophomore forward Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.

UW-Whitewater out-shot UW-River Falls 9-1 in the first half. The Falcons' lone attempt of the period was stopped in the 34th minute by junior goalkeeper Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North).

The Warhawks continued to be the aggressor early in the second half, firing off six shots in the first 20 minutes of the period.

UW-Whitewater doubled its lead in the 77th minute, when freshman forward Savannah Curtis (Lodi, Wis./Lodi) cleaned up a deflection off the foot of sophomore forward Anna Perona (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy).

Yonan collected two more saves in the second half to finish with three for the contest and pick up her sixth win of the season, including her fifth shutout of the year.

The Warhawks finished with an 18-6 advantage in shots and didn't allow the Falcons to take a corner kick.
