MEQUON, Wis. – A goal by each team in the first was the total offensive output of the match as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team battled Concordia (Wis.) to a double-overtime tie Saturday at Fitting Field in Mequon.
The Warhawks gave up an early goal as the Falcons slipped one by
Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) in the fifth minute for a 1-0 lead.
UW-W tied things up twenty minutes later when
Peter Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) sent a through-ball to
Henry Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) who buried it into the bottom right corner for his first goal of the season.
For the next three minutes, the Warhawks kept pressure on Concordia with shots on goal by
Hozai Ceballos (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) and
Jamie Wunrow (Franklin, Wis./Whitnall), but both shots were stopped by Falcon keeper Nate Yeager.
Neither team mounted a quality attack in the final 15 minutes of the first half and the teams headed into halftime tied at one.
Both teams came out of halftime with an aggressive attack.
Peter Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) put a shot on net for the Warhawks in the 47th minute that was turned away by Yeager. Zach Gyuricza of Concordia tested backup goalkeeper
Toney Anderson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) moments later, but Anderson made the save.
The teams went back and forth for the rest of regulation, but after ninety minutes the game remained tied at one.
Concordia opened the first overtime period with a header on goal that Anderson saved followed by two more shots, one that sailed wide and the other high.
The Warhawks countered with shots by
Alex Whiteman (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) and
Henry Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East), but the first overtime period ended the same as regulation, tied 1-1.
The first five minutes of the second overtime period featured several opportunities for the Warhawks as they earned two corner kicks, but UW-W was unable to capitalize.
The Falcons turned up the heat in the final five minutes, peppering the Warhawk goal with four shots, two that were saved by Anderson, one that hit the crossbar and one that was blocked, but the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
Up next for the Warhawks, 3-2-1, is a trip to De Pere, Wisconsin on Sunday to play St. Norbert in a match beginning at 7 p.m.
