The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team will conclude regular season non-conference play this Saturday, Sept. 16, at 12 p.m. at Washington-St. Louis at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo. Wash U. is independent this season but will be a member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin starting in 2018.

The Warhawks enter Saturday's contest coming off a 25-17 setback at Concordia Moorhead (Minn.) to drop to 0-2 for the first time since 1999. UW-Whitewater outgained the Cobbers 363-336 in total yardage but committed 11 penalties for 70 yards and three turnovers. The Warhawks drove deep into Concordia territory with under one minute to play, but were stopped on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line with 24 seconds to play.

The Warhawks were ranked third in both Street & Smith's preseason national rankings and the D3football.com Preseason Top 25 and 15th in Lindy's Sports Division III Top 25. UW-Whitewater is receiving votes in the latest D3football.com Top 25.

Washington-St. Louis enters this weekend's showdown following a 28-12 triumph over rival Chicago at home last Saturday. The Bears took the lead for good on a touchdown with 28 seconds to play in the first half. Wash U. also tallied eight sacks and outgained the Maroons 446-281 in total yards to offset nine turnovers, including five interceptions and four lost fumbles.

SERIES

UW-Whitewater leads the all time series 2-0, posting back-to-back wins during the regular season over Washington-St. Louis in 2012 and 2013. In the most recent meeting, the Warhawks held the Bears to 195 total yards and scored all of their points in the fourth quarter of a 17-7 triumph on Sept. 7, 2013, at Perkins Stadium.

NEXT UP

After a bye week, UW-Whitewater begins the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference slate with a visit to defending national runner-up and No. 3 UW-Oshkosh on Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.

NOTABLE

  • The 17 tackles made by junior linebacker Bryce Leszczynski (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) last Saturday at Concordia Moorhead were the most by a Warhawk since Nov. 12, 2005, when Robb Widuch collected 22 tackles and A.J. Raebel tallied 20 stops.
  • The Warhawks look to avoid their first 0-3 start since the 1999 season, when the team was downed by Lambuth (39-16), Hardin-Simmons (25-7) and Western Washington (45-14) in three games to start the year.
