UW-Whitewater Announces 2017 Hall of Fame Class

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater department of intercollegiate athletics has announced its 53rd Hall of Fame Class.
 
Former student-athletes John Borta '03, Eric Burdette '98, , Tabitha Fendrick '02, Pat Frascone '02, Nicole Hoida '02, Kristin (Dettman) Peer '02, Angie Wildish '04 and Jake Wolter '04 will be inducted. Other honorees include Tom Fick under the category of athletic department personnel and Wayne and Edith Saxe, who will receive the Distinguished Service Award.
 
All 11 individuals will be recognized for their contributions to Warhawk athletics as part of the UW-Whitewater football team's game against UW-Platteville on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. Inductees will be honored at halftime of the contest and at the annual Hall of Fame banquet following the game.

John Borta competed for the UW-Whitewater men's swimming and diving and team from 1998-2002. The Wonder Lake, Ill., native was a five-time All-American in freestyle events, claiming national runner-up honors in the 200-yard freestyle at the 2000 NCAA Division III Championships. Borta won six Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships in freestyle events and garnered 11 All-WIAC medals overall. A three-time WIAC Men's Swimmer of the Week, Borta still holds school records in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:41.54) and the 1650-yard freestyle (15:57.09). Borta graduated with a bachelor's in physical education and a minor in coaching.

Eric Burdette was a member of the UW-Whitewater men's basketball program from 1994-98. During his standout career, he garnered three all-conference accolades, including first team in 1995-96 and honorable mention in 1996-97 and 1997-98. A member of three NCAA Tournament qualifying teams, Burdette holds program records in career 3-pointers made (266) and attempted (646) and is fifth all time in free throw percentage (83.6 percent) and 10th in 3-point percentage (41.2). He also ranks among all time leaders in numerous other game, season and career records, and his 43-point performance on Feb. 29, 1996, was a school record for scoring in one game until this past season. A Janesville, Wis., native, Burdette graduated from UW-Whitewater with a degree in human resource management.

Tabitha Fendrick was a seven-time All-American and 2002 CoSIDA Academic All-American for the UW-Whitewater women's track and field team from 1999-2002. One of the most decorated throwers in program history, Fendrick won the national championship in the discus throw in 1999 and finished as national runner-up in the event in 2000 and 2001. The Marinette native claimed eight conference titles in throwing events and two WIAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors, and was a nine-time All-WIAC honoree and two-time WIAC Field Performer of the Meet. In 2012, Fendrick was selected to the WIAC Centennial Women's Track and Field All-Time Team. She also enjoyed a strong career away from the track at UW-Whitewater, earning the WIAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete award in 2002 and four listings on the annual WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. She graduated with a bachelor's in social work.

Pat Frascone was a four-year standout for the men's cross country and track and field programs from 1998-2002. He was a three-time All-American in track and field, including the 2002 national champion in the 5,000-meter run, and was a three-time WIAC champion in the 5,000-meter run (indoor and outdoor) and the 10,000-meter run (outdoor). In cross country, Frascone garnered All-America accolades in 2000 with a 15th-place finish in 2000 and was a 1999 national qualifier, placing 58th at the NCAA Championships. He earned All-Region and All-WIAC honors in both 1999 and 2000 and owns the No. 12 personal best time in program history (24:51 in 1999). Frascone also currently owns the school's top time in program history on the UW-Whitewater course (25:12 in 2000). He was named WIAC Men's Cross Country Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete in 2000. An Elmwood Park, Ill., native, Frascone graduated with a degree in mathematics with a minor in physics.

Nicole Hoida was the UW-Whitewater gymnastics team's first-ever National Collegiate Gymnastics Association national champion, claiming top honors on the balance beam in 2000. The Mukwonago, Wis., native was a three-time NCGA national qualifier overall, placing 17th in the all-around competition in 1999 and 17th on the balance beam in 2001. Hoida was tabbed WIAC Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 14-20, 2000, and is part of several of the program's top 20 performances when only four scores were counted. She is a part of the No. 1 team balance beam and floor exercise scores, the No. 2 vault score and the No. 4 score on the uneven parallel bars. A member of the 2001-02 WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll, Hoida graduated with a degree general business.

Kristin (Dettman) Peer was a two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American and two-time College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-American for the Warhawk volleyball team. During her career, which spanned from 1999-2002, Dettman helped lead UW-Whitewater to four WIAC Tournament championships, three conference regular season titles and four NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program's first-ever NCAA championship in 2002 and back-to-back national runner-up finishes in 2000 and 2001. The setter garnered first team All-WIAC and AVCA All-Region accolades two times each, and was selected to the 2002 NCAA Division III Championship All-Tournament Team. She was named WIAC Volleyball Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete in 2002. Dettman is the program's all time leader in career assists (5,541) and is tied for fifth in program history in career service aces (205). The Pulaski native was a four-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and was once tabbed WIAC Offensive Player of the Week. Dettman graduated with a bachelor's in accounting.

Angie Wildish was a member of the UW-Whitewater volleyball team from 1999-2002. She was an outside hitter for four WIAC Tournament championship teams, three conference regular season title teams and four NCAA Tournament qualifying teams, including the 2002 national championship team and national runners-up in 2000 and 2001. Wildish was a two-time AVCA All-American, including a first team selection in 2002, when she was also tabbed WIAC Player of the Year and as a member of the NCAA Division III Championship All-Tournament Team. She also earned first team All-WIAC and AVCA All-Region accolades two times, and was a three-time all-conference honoree overall. Wildish is ranked among the program's top 10 all time in career kills (1,639 – 2nd), career attacks (4,640 – 2nd), career matches with 20-plus kills and digs (9 – 2nd), career digs (2,365 – 3rd), career matches with double figure digs (102 – 3rd) and matches with 20-plus kills (9 – 3rd). She was a three-time WIAC Player of the Week selection. A native of Menomonee Falls, Wildish graduated with a bachelor's in physical education.

Jake Wolter was a standout in two sports, competing for the Warhawk football team from 1997-2000 and the men's basketball team in 1998-99 and from 2000-02. In football, he was named All-America by three organizations as a defensive back in 2000, when he served as a captain and was named the team's Most Valuable Player, and honorable mention All-America as a kick returner in 1999. A three-time all-conference selection, Wolter was a part of back-to-back WIAC championships in 1997 and 1998 and helped the team reach the NCAA Playoffs in 1997. He finished his career as the program's all time leader in career interceptions (20), which ranks him tied for eighth in conference history and still stands as the program's record. In basketball, Wolter was a two-time all-league honoree for back-to-back WIAC championship teams in 2001 and 2002. He finished his career ranked third all time in career steals (167) and steals average (2.14) and eighth in career 3-pointers made (121) and attempted (356). The Wauwatosa native graduated with a bachelor's in physical education and a minor in coaching.

Tom Fick served as sports information director at UW-Whitewater from 1976-2014. During his tenure, Fick saw the school transition from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) to NCAA Division III and helped foster the growth of Warhawk Athletics into a national power. UW-Whitewater claimed 17 national championships during Fick's time as SID and an 18th title before his retirement from the institution in January 2015. He mentored dozens of student workers during his 30-plus years in the profession, referring to his relationships built with students as "absolutely the best part of my job." In addition to his experiences at UW-Whitewater, Fick served as a volunteer in media relations for the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee (1984), the United States Olympic Committee in Seoul (1988), the Atlanta Olympic Organizing Committee (1996) and the USOC Press Operations Office at U.S. Olympic Festivals in 1986, 1987 and 1989. Most recently, he served as a volunteer in media services at the Boston Marathon from 2010-12 and as Press Operations Supervisor for the equestrian competition at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. In 2014, Fick earned a College Sports Information Directors of America Lifetime Achievement Award and a WIAC Special Recognition Award. He currently resides in Fort Atkinson.

Wayne and Edith Saxe have been avid supporters of the UW-Whitewater athletic department and its teams for more than 35 years. The Saxes have been members of the Quarterback Club and Tip-Off Club for more than 35 years and hosted meetings for the two booster groups for more than 30 years, accommodating the two programs in any way possible. The couple has sponsored an advertisement in the Warhawk Football game program since 1980 and has been a hole sponsor for UW-Whitewater football, men's basketball and baseball golf outings every year since 1985. The Saxes have also donated to and participated in the annual Warhawk Auction Raffle to benefit the three programs.
