Softball Wins Two More, Now 6-0 in WIAC

The No. 15 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team posted a pair of dominant performances to sweep UW-Platteville in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at van Steenderen Softball Complex.

The Warhawks (20-6 overall, 6-0 WIAC) downed the Pioneers (7-19, 1-7) by a 5-0 score in the opener, then posted an 8-0 victory in the nightcap in five innings due to run rule.

In the opener, the Warhawks plated a pair of early runs to back freshman pitcher Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield), who tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout to improve to 8-3 for the season.

Senior first baseman Amy Ricci (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) and junior second baseman Michayla Swanson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) provided run-scoring base hits in the bottom of the first. Senior right fielder Haley Morelli (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) led off the third with her seventh home run of the season.

Morelli added another RBI with a double in the bottom of the fifth, and Ricci singled home senior Jessica Kaemerer (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West), who pinch ran for Morelli.

Morelli, Ricci and sophomore centerfielder Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) tallied two hits apiece. Catino also scored twice.

UW-Whitewater exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first inning in Game 2. Junior left fielder Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) started the frame with a solo homer, and Swanson mashed a three-run homer to left with two outs to make it 4-0.

Two batters later, freshman catcher Nicole Neitzel (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) knocked an RBI double to left center to extend the lead to five.

In the second, freshman third baseman Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) roped a single off the centerfield fence to drive home two runs. Ricci made the lead eight runs in the third with a run-scoring single.

Sophomore Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) improve to 4-2 on the season with a complete-game shutout. She allowed only four hits over five innings of work.

The Warhawks resume WIAC action Friday with a doubleheader at UW-Stevens Point. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
