The No. 15 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team remained unbeaten in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a pair of victories Friday afternoon at UW-Stevens Point in a doubleheader.
The Warhawks (22-6 overall, 8-0 WIAC) earned a 7-0 triumph over the Pointers in the opener and jumped out to a big lead in the second game en route to an 11-6 win.
In the first game, the Warhawks were propelled by a five-run second inning and another fantastic pitching performance by freshman
Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield).
Freshman third baseman
Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) started the second with a one-out, solo homer. Sophomore designated player
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) singled home a run two batters later, and junior left fielder
Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) knocked a sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-0.
Sophomore centerfielder
Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) capped the inning with a two-run single to left.
Senior right fielder
Haley Morelli (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) knocked a solo home run to left center in the top of the fifth to push the UW-Whitewater lead to six, and sophomore shortstop
Kelly Berglund (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) posted a two-out base hit in the seventh for another insurance run.
Matthias improved to 9-3 on the season with another masterful performance, tossing a two-hit shutout while allowing only two walks and striking out four. The performance was her third straight complete-game shutout and fifth of the season.
Cohrs led the offense with two hits.
UW-Whitewater put up three runs in the first inning of the nightcap and never looked back despite UW-Stevens Point (8-18, 1-7) narrowing its deficit to two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Senior first baseman
Amy Ricci (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) finished 3-for-5 with one RBI, and Cohrs collected three hits and one walk while scoring three runs.
Berglund recorded two hits and a team-high four RBI. Morelli hit her ninth homer of the season and finished with two hits and two RBI, and Klotz and junior second baseman
Michayla Swanson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) registered two hits apiece.
Camardo (5-2) surrendered three runs on seven hits and struck out six in six innings.
UW-Whitewater concludes the home portion of its regular season schedule Wednesday with a doubleheader against Illinois Wesleyan. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at van Steenderen Softball Complex.
