WIAC Release

Jack Miller, Matt Turk X'90 and Dave Vander Meulen will represent the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the 2018 class of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Hall of Fame this summer, the league announced Thursday, Dec. 14.

Twenty-seven new members, including former coaches, student-athletes, administrators and supporters of the conference's eight member schools and the league itself, will be part of the second induction class, which will be recognized at the WIAC Hall of Fame Banquet on July 28 at UW-Eau Claire.

The WIAC established its Hall of Fame as part of the conference's 100-year anniversary celebration, which took place during the 2012-13 academic year.

Jack Miller, Administrator

Miller served as chancellor at UW-Whitewater from 1999-2005. He oversaw the completion of the $14.5 million Kachel Fieldhouse, home of UW-Whitewater indoor track and field, a practice facility for multiple Warhawk teams, a recreation sports facility and site of the institution's commencement ceremonies. Miller also headed a highly successful campaign to raise money for a new College of Business and economics building and was a global ambassador for Warhawk Athletics and UW-Whitewater, traveling around the country and to Costa Rica, England and South Africa to teach. The Warhawks won their first of 16 national championships in a 15-year span during his tenure (volleyball, 2002).

Miller earned his bachelor's from Ohio University in 1969, his master's in education from Northern Illinois University in 1972 and his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1975. He was named chancellor at Central Connecticut State University, where he served until his retirement in 2016.

Matt Turk, Student-Athlete/Lifetime Achievement

Turk was a member of the UW-Whitewater football team from 1987-90. A two-time All-WIAC honoree, Turk punted and played tight end and was a part of the program's 1988 and 1990 WIAC championship teams.

Following his collegiate career, Turk played for 17 seasons as a punter in the National Football League from 1995-2004 and from 2006-11. He averaged 42.4 yards per punt for his career and was tabbed a first team All-Pro in 1996. A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Turk appeared in the playoffs five times during his career and was a five-time NFC/AFC Player of the Week.

Turk was the oldest player in the NFL upon his retirement in 2011.

Dave Vander Meulen, Coach

Vander Meulen served as head men's basketball coach at UW-Whitewater from 1978-2001. He led the Warhawks four WIAC championships and 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, including three Final Fours and national titles in 1984 and 1989. Vander Meulen was a two-time National Coach of the Year, five-time Regional Coach of the Year and five-time WIAC Coach of the Year honoree. He amassed a career record of 440-182 (.707 winning percentage), good for second in conference history.

Vander Meulen is a member of the Madison East High School Athletics Hall of Fame, Rhinelander High School Hodag Hall of Fame, Madison Sports Hall of Fame, Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame and UW-Whitewater Athletics Hall of Fame. He was a recipient of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division III Outstanding Service Award in 2013.

Vander Meulen's contributions extend beyond the court. In 1992, he teamed with several local boosters to start Wally and Rod's Warhawk Raffle Auction, an annual fall event that helps fundraise thousands of dollars to support the Warhawks' men's basketball, baseball and football programs. He continues to serve on the UW-Whitewater Athletics Hall of Fame Committee.
