Women’s Soccer Blanks UW-Eau Claire

The No. 18 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team exhibited a relentless offensive attack Saturday, putting constant pressure on the defense before finding the back of the net in the second half for a 1-0 victory over UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Fiskum Field.

Junior defender Alyssa Lennon (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) found the back of the net for the first time this season, posting what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 79th minute. After a corner kick by junior defender Adria Schueler (Wales, Wis./Mukwonago), Lennon collected the ball from the scrum and finished past the goalkeeper to put UW-Whitewater ahead for good.

The Warhawks (8-2-3 overall, 1-1-1 WIAC) out-shot the Blugolds 17-10 in the contest, including 9-4 on goal, and totaled 10 corner kicks compared to three for UW-Eau Claire (4-6-1, 1-1).

Sophomore goalkeeper Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) improve her record to 6-2-3 with her third shutout of the year, posting four saves in the process.

Senior midfielder Marie Lesperance (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) and junior forward Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) led the Warhawks' persistent offensive attack, combining for five shots on goal.

The Blugolds tallied two corner kicks in the first three minutes of the contest and a couple of shots on goal in the 11th and 12th minutes to test Klimisch early. UW-Eau Claire finished the half with a 7-6 advantage in shots.

UW-Whitewater put heavy pressure on the Blugolds' defense throughout the second half, and Lennon's game-winner came after the third of three Warhawk corner kicks in a three-minute span.

UW-Eau Claire put a shot on goal in the 86th minute on a header, but UW-Whitewater held strong in the defensive third for the team's sixth shutout of the season.

The Warhawks continue WIAC play next Saturday, Oct. 14, at UW-River Falls at 3 p.m.
