No. 9 Volleyball Closes Regular Season With Loss

The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team played its second five-set match in a 24-hour span Saturday afternoon, falling 19-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-19, 15-11 against Concordia Wisconsin in a non-conference affair at Russell Arena.

The Warhawks (20-7 overall) were limited to a .142 hitting percentage by the Falcons (26-2), who hit .238 on the other side of the net.

Senior right side hitter Sydney Racky (Walworth, Wis./Big Foot) collected 16 kills, 11 digs and three service aces to lead UW-Whitewater. Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Butterfield (Milton, Wis./Milton) registered 11 kills and two blocks, and junior outside hitter Amanda Spera (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) posted 11 kills and four service aces.

Senior middle hitter Courtney Wagner (Dekalb, Ill./Dekalb) put down nine kills to go along with three blocks, and freshman setter Nikki Stratton (Kenosha, Wis./Westosha Central) tallied 28 assists, nine digs and two service aces.

Junior libero Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) totaled 30 digs and five assists, and sophomore defensive specialist Elizabeth Tworek (Lake Zurich, Ill./Carmel Catholic) contributed 16 digs.

The Warhawks hit .316 in the opening set, racing to a 12-6 advantage and never leading by fewer than four the rest of the frame.

Concordia started the second set with a 6-1 run and never looked back. UW-Whitewater drew to within 14-11 with a 4-0 run on Spera's serve, but the Falcons rattled off the next eight points to take a commanding lead and eventually level the match at 1-1.

The Warhawks fell behind again in the third set, trailing 10-6 before a 7-1 run that included three straight aces by Spera to take a 13-11 advantage. The Falcons took a 20-18 lead with a four-point run later in the set, but UW-Whitewater scored five of the next six points, including two kills by Spera, and Racky and Wagner broke a 23-23 tie with back-to-back kills to give the team a 2-1 match lead.

The Warhawks jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the fourth, but Concordia chopped away at the deficit and eventually tied the set at 14-14. From there, the Falcons scored the next seven points and hung on to push the match to a decisive fifth set.

UW-Whitewater recorded four of the first five points in the fifth and led 8-5 after kills by Butterfield and Wagner. Concordia scored six of the next eight points for an 11-10 lead.

After a kill by Racky tied it, the Falcons scored the final four points to close out the match.

The Warhawks are the No. 3 seed in next week's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament and will host the loser of Saturday night's UW-Oshkosh/UW-Stout match in a first round contest on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Russell Arena.
