The seventh-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team recovered from a first-set loss to extend its win streak to 12 matches Wednesday night with a 19-25, 27-25, 26-24, 25-22 triumph at Edgewood in a non-conference contest in Madison, Wis.
Senior right side hitter
Sydney Racky (Walworth, Wis./Big Foot) was one of four players in double figure kills for the Warhawks (19-3 overall). She finished with 14 kills, eight digs and three service aces.
Sophomore outside hitter
Rachel Butterfield (Milton, Wis./Milton) collected 12 kills and two blocks, and junior outside hitter
Amanda Spera (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) registered 11 kills and three digs. Senior middle hitter
Courtney Wagner (Dekalb, Ill./Dekalb) contributed 10 kills and two blocks.
Junior setter
Elizabeth Niestrom (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) totaled 41 assists, seven digs and four kills. Junior libero
Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) posted 20 digs, three assists and four service aces, and sophomore defensive specialist
Elizabeth Tworek (Lake Zurich, Ill./Carmel Catholic) added 10 digs.
After the Eagles took a 1-0 lead with a first-set win, the Warhawks fell behind 15-11 in the second and trailed 23-21 late in the set, but three straight kills by junior middle hitter
Kelley Berk (Cedarburg, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels), Racky and Butterfield gave the team a set point at 24-23.
Edgewood tallied the next two points to grab a set point of its own, but UW-Whitewater got a kill from Wagner and a block from Butterfield to level the match at 1-1.
The two teams traded points in the third set, and the Eagles claimed a set point at 24-23. The Warhawks recorded the next three points, breaking a tie on a service ace by freshman defensive specialist
Abigail Boyden (Malta, Ill./DeKalb) and clinching the set with a kill by Spera.
UW-Whitewater broke a 9-9 tie in the fourth and didn't relinquish the lead for the remainder of the set.
The Warhawks head to UW-Oshkosh Saturday for matches against No. 22 Texas-Dallas at 9:30 a.m. and No. 18 Illinois Wesleyan at 1:30 p.m.
