Men’s Hoops Can’t Overcome Early Deficit

The No. 11 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team saw its 11-game win streak come to an end Wednesday night with an 82-68 setback against UW-La Crosse in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Kachel Gymnasium.
 
The Warhawks (11-1 overall, 0-1 WIAC) shot 50 percent from the floor in the contest, but the Eagles made 54.7 percent of their attempts, including 60 percent in the first half, and hit 18-of-27 free throws, including 16-of-23 in the second half.
 
Junior forwards Scotty Tyler (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) and Demetrius Woodley (Milwaukee, Wis./Vincent) tallied 17 points and four rebounds apiece to lead UW-Whitewater. Sophomore guard Andre Brown (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) collected 15 points and four assists.
 
UW-La Crosse (9-3, 1-0) scored on nine of its first 10 possessions of the contest en route to a 20-13 lead with 13:36 on the clock.
 
The Eagles led by as many as 13 points in the period, but the Warhawks narrowed their deficit to six by the 2:07 mark on a pair of free throws by Woodley. UW-La Crosse hit a 3-pointer on the next possession and neither team scored in the final 1:44 of the half.
 
UW-Whitewater drew to within 46-38 with 17:03 remaining in the contest, but the Eagles scored the next five to take a 14-point advantage with 14:11 left.
 
Woodley, who set his Warhawk career high in scoring, brought the Warhawks within 72-64 on a steal and 3-point play on the other end with 3:16 t play, but a 12-1 run by UW-La Crosse sealed the game.
 
UW-Whitewater visits seventh-ranked UW-Eau Claire this Saturday at 5 p.m. for its first WIAC road game of the season.
