Box Score The No. 11 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team erased three deficits of seven points or more Saturday afternoon but fell short in a 68-63 setback at seventh-ranked UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown in Eau Claire, Wis.
The Warhawks (11-2 overall, 0-2 WIAC) finished with a 16-2 advantage in second-chance points and shot 46.2 percent from the floor, but the Blugolds shot 22-of-30 from the free-throw line compared to UW-Whitewater's 9-of-12 clip.
Sophomore guard
Andre Brown (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) posted 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting to lead UW-Whitewater. Sophomore guard/forward
Derek Rongstad (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) collected 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds, and junior forward
Scotty Tyler (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) totaled 14 points.
UW-Eau Claire (11-2, 1-1) led by nine midway through the first half, but the Warhawks quickly erased the deficit with a 12-0 run, including seven straight points by Rongstad, and took a 23-20 lead with 3:56 left in the period.
Junior forward
Demetrius Woodley (Milwaukee, Wis./Vincent) scored the team's final five points of the half to bring UW-Whitewater within 30-28 heading into the locker room.
The Blugolds started the second half on a 7-2 run to take a 37-30 advantage with 16:32 on the clock, but the Warhawks fought back again with a 9-0 run. Brown capped the spurt with a 3-pointer to give the team a 39-37 lead with 14:22 to play.
After UW-Eau Claire tied the game on the next possession, UW-Whitewater never held another lead. The Blugolds held a 60-53 advantage with 3:48 remaining, but the Warhawks drew to within one possession at the 3:02 mark after free throws by Rongstad and Tyler.
UW-Eau Claire knocked down six free throws in the final 1:25 of regulation to seal the win.
The Warhawks host No. 17 UW-River Falls Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium.
