The No. 13 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team improved to 8-1 with a 1-0 win over No. 20 Augustana College Wednesday at Thorson-Lucken Field in Rock Island, Illinois. The Warhawks, winners of seven straight, hand the Vikings their second loss of the season.
Â
The first half was a defensive battle. Augustana's Jordyn Sundberg fired the only shot on goal in the final moments of the first half, but
Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) made the save and the teams entered halftime scoreless.
Â
The scoreless tie was broken when
Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) and
Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) connected for a goal in the 55th minute of play to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead. The goal is the fourth of the year for Pottle and the assist is Reid's fourth.
Â
With just under eleven minutes to go in the game, Augustana earned a corner kick. Viking defender Bri Frys put the ball in play with a short pass that was immediately passed back to her. Frys sent a dangerous cross into the box that bounced around in front of the goal, but Klimisch snatched it up before any damage was done.
Â
Klimisch made three saves in the match en route to her fourth shutout of the season.
Â
This was the third consecutive win for UW-W over a ranked opponent. The Warhawks topped No. 3 Washington-St. Louis 1-0 last Saturday before defeating No. 17 DePauw 3-1 on Sunday.
Â
The Warhawks will return to action on Saturday when they host St. Catherine at 4 p.m. at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
