The No. 14 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team put together a complete performance Wednesday night to defeat No. 20 UW-Oshkosh 25-19, 25-18, 25-18 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Kris Russell Volleyball Arena.
The Warhawks (9-3 overall, 1-0 WIAC) finished with a .255 hitting percentage, including a .444 mark in the first set, and posted a season-high 10 service aces as a team.
UW-Whitewater held the Titans (11-3, 0-1) to a .124 hitting percentage, including sub-.100 hitting marks in the second and third sets.
Junior right side hitter
Sydney Racky (Walworth, Wis./Big Foot) paced the offense with 11 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Junior middle hitter
Courtney Wagner (Dekalb, Ill./Dekalb) posted 10 kills and four blocks.
Senior setter
Staci Hasler (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) registered 33 assists and four blocks, and freshman middle hitter
Ashton Doll (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) tallied a team-best six blocks up front.
Sophomore libero
Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) led the defense with 18 digs, and senior defensive specialist
Tessa Weber (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Tremper) chipped in with seven.
UW-Whitewater scored the first five points of the first set and eventually jumped out to a 10-3 advantage.
UW-Oshkosh got as close as two points at 11-9, but the Warhawks countered by scoring four of the next five points and never trailed by fewer than three points the rest of the period.
The Titans jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second, but UW-Whitewater scored six straight points from there on the serve of freshman defensive specialist
Elizabeth Tworek (Lake Zurich, Ill./Carmel Catholic), who recorded three straight service aces during the run and finished with a team-high five for the night.
UW-Oshkosh leveled the set at 14-14, but Wagner started a four-point run with a kill and the Titans never got closer than two the rest of the set.
In the third, the Warhawks started on an 8-2 run behind the serves of Robinson and Tworek and didn't look back.
UW-Whitewater will play its second straight match against a ranked opponent Friday as it hosts 13th-ranked Christopher Newport (Va.). First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at Russell Arena.
