Warhawks Top Westminster in Opening Round of NCAA Tournament

Sauget, Ill. – The No. 15 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team pounded out 15 hits and allowed four runs in a 11-4 victory over Westminster College (Mo.) at GCS Ball Park.
 
After two scoreless frames, the Warhawks (30-14 overall) tallied once in the third, four times in the fifth, once in the sixth and seventh, and four more times in the eighth.
 
Senior right-hander Curtis Morgan (Green Lake/Green Lake) stymied the offense of the Blue Jays (29-14), improving to 6-2 on the season with five strikeouts in six and a 1/3rd innings of work.
 
Sophomore RHP Heath Renz (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) tossed two and 1/3rd innings of scoreless ball in relief.
 
Freshman third baseman Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a run batted in to lead UW-Whitewater's potent offense. Senior catcher Dane Burman (Milton, Wis./Milton) and sophomore first baseman Blake Fleischman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) each hit key homeruns in the ballgame. Burman finished 1-for-3 from the plate while Fleischman finished 2-for-4 at the dish to go along with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
 
Juniors Jordan Kuczynski (Germantown/Germantown), Steve Chamberlain (Rockford, IL/Guilford), and sophomore designated hitter Will Helbing (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) each finished with two hits apiece. Sophomore center fielder Daytona Bryden (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) and freshman left fielder Matt Wary (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) each recorded a hit in the contest.
 
Westminster opened the scoring in the top of the second inning to take the early lead. The Warhawks tied the ball game in the bottom of the third inning thanks to Burman's solo blast.
 
UW-Whitewater pushed across four runs in the fifth inning to take their first lead of the game and wouldn't look back. Scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning sealed the victory for the Warhawks and advanced to the second round of games.
 
The Warhawks will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they will take on the loser of the Augustana (Ill.) vs. Washington University which will be played tonight at 7:00 p.m. First pitch for tomorrow's contest is set for 3:30 p.m. Central Standard Time.
