The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team split a pair of pitching duels Tuesday afternoon at eighth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan in a non-conference doubleheader in Bloomington, Ill.
The Warhawks (19-10 overall) claimed the opener by a 2-1 score, but were shut out 2-0 in the finale.
In the first game, sophomore second baseman
Michayla Swanson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the top of the third inning, and senior right fielder
Morgan Parise (Sheboygan, Wis./North) clubbed a solo home run to lead off the fourth for what proved to be the game-winning run.
Freshman pitcher
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) held the Titans (24-6) to only one unearned run on two hits. She improved to 11-3 on the year in the complete-game, nine-strikeout performance.
In the second game, junior third baseman
Hannah Taylor (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) and sophomore left fielder
Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) tallied the lone hits for UW-Whitewater, which left runners on base in five of the seven innings.
Junior pitcher
Cara Smoczynski (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) took the hard-luck loss, dropping to 1-1 on the year after tossing 5 1/3 innings and allowing only one earned run.
Camardo posted the final two outs in the bottom of the sixth in relief of Smoczynski.
The Warhawks host UW-Oshkosh this Saturday at 1 p.m. for a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at van Steenderen Softball Complex. UW-Whitewater will honor Parise and fellow senior
Maggie Hansen (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) as part of Senior Day.
