The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team, playing its seventh and eighth games in a seven-day span, swept UW-Superior Sunday in a non-conference doubleheader in Eau Claire, Wis.
The Warhawks (18-9 overall) shut out the Yellowjackets 4-0 in the first game, and took the nightcap by an 8-2 margin.
Freshman pitcher
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) tossed a two-hit shutout in the opener, striking out seven while improving to 10-3 on the season.
Camardo retired the first nine hitters she faced as UW-Whitewater tallied one run in each of the first three frames. The team added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Freshman shortstop
Emily Rux (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) plated the first run with a base hit in the first, and sophomore second baseman
Michayla Swanson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) knocked a sacrifice fly in the second.
Freshman catcher
Nikki Mikosz (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) increased the Warhawks' lead to three in the third with a single up the middle. Freshman third baseman
Kelly Berglund (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) added one more in the sixth with a ground ball to second.
In the second contest, junior
Stephanie Waller (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) and freshman
Molly Ethington (Rock Island, Ill./Alleman Catholic) combined to allow UW-Superior (17-9) a total of five hits. Waller (6-4) tossed the first five innings to pick up the win, and Ethington pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
Senior left fielder
Morgan Parise (Sheboygan, Wis./North) was one of nine players in the UW-Whitewater lineup to post at least one hit, pacing the team with two hits, one run scored and one run batted in.
Rux recorded a team-high three RBI, and Mikosz finished with one hit and a team-best two runs scored.
The Warhawks continue non-conference play Tuesday at No. 8 Illinois Wesleyan. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
