Baseball Sweeps UW-Platteville

The No. 1 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team remained one game back of first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Saturday after a pair of victories at UW-Platteville in the first of two doubleheaders for the weekend.

The Warhawks (16-3 overall, 5-1 WIAC) recorded a 14-10 triumph in 10 innings in the first game, and claimed the nightcap by a 7-4 score.

In the second game, UW-Whitewater crossed the plate three times each in the third and fifth innings, and junior left-hander Ankur Shah (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) put together another quality start, allowing just one earned run in seven innings while striking out six to improve to 3-0 for the season.

Freshman righty Sam Heilenbach (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) pitched the final two innings to pick up his first career save.

Senior right fielder Trent Diekvoss (Beaver Dam/Beaver Dam) and freshman third baseman Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) each homered to lead the Warhawks. Diekvoss hit a solo shot in the second and added a two-out, two-run double in the fifth, and Aldridge knocked a three-run shot, his fourth of the year, in the third.

Sophomore left fielder Will Helbing (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) added a run-scoring double with two down in the fifth.

In the opener, after the Pioneers tied the game at 7-7 with three runs in the bottom of the ninth, the Warhawks exploded for seven runs in the top of the 10th to retake control of the contest.

After junior second baseman Dylan Bersch (Pulaski/Pulaski) and junior shortstop Jordan Kuczynski (Germantown/Germantown) each plated a run to start the frame, sophomore designated hitter Blake Fleischman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) delivered with a bases-loaded, three-run double to right center.

Aldridge knocked in Fleischman with a two-run homer.

UW-Platteville responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, and had the tying run in the on-deck circle before sophomore pitcher Austin Jones (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) came on in relief for the final out of the game.

Jones earned his first save in his first appearance in 2016. Sophomore right-hander Heath Renz (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the season.

Fleischman finished 3-for-6 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Jones was 3-for-6 with one run scored and one RBI, and Kuczynski posted two hits, including a homer, and scored two runs.

Senior catcher Dane Burman (Milton, Wis./Milton) registered a solo home run and scored a team-high three runs, and freshman first baseman Aaron Markley (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) collected three hits.

Senior right-hander Curtis Morgan (Green Lake/Green Lake) pitched the first seven innings, striking out five.

UW-Whitewater continues action against UW-Platteville Sunday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
