Related Links:Box Score Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team won their second game in a row by defeating UW-Platteville by a score of 104-86 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.
This is the third time the Warhawks have eclipsed the 100 point mark this season.
UW-Whitewater (14-8 overall, 5-6 WIAC) held the lead for almost the entire game thanks to hot shooting from behind the arc and strong defense. UW-Platteville also shot well from the field, shooting just over 50 percent on the night. The Warhawks went 29-of-35 from the free-throw line which was a huge factor in this contest. The Pioneers (10-12 overall, 4-7 WIAC) only attempted 12 free-throws on the night.
The Warhawks shot 56.4 percent from the field on 31-of-55 attempts. UW-Whitewater had four players score in double figures, including three from the front court and one from the back court.
Senior guard/forward
Trinson White (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside) led the Warhawks with a team-high 27 points to go along with seven rebounds, senior
Haki Stampley (Milwaukee, Wis./Hamilton) tallied 23 points including four 3-pointers, while grabbing five rebounds. Junior
Cole Van Schyndel (Kaukauna, Wis./Wrightstown) posted 16 points, while corralling a team-high eight rebounds.
Freshman guard
Mitchell Pfeifer (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine) was 3-of-4 from the field tonight including 2-of-2 from behind the arc to go along with six rebounds.
After a tightly contested first eight minutes that saw three ties, UW-Whitewater jumped to a five point lead on Stampley 3-pointer, UW-Platteville got back to within one with just under ten minutes to play. The Warhawks and the Pioneers went back and forth until UW-Whitewater went on a 11-to-4 run stretching over a four minute span to close out the half leading 47-35.
UW-Whitewater extended its lead to 15 on a made 3-pointer by White a minute and half into the second half. The Warhawks grew their lead to 20 points on a made 3-pointer by
Maurquis Turner (Milwaukee, Wis./King) with 17:46 left in the half. The Pioneers got the game back to within 11 points with 12:22 to play.
Two free-throws by White who was perfect from the line on the night, followed by a made 3-pointer by Stampley extended their lead to 25 points with 4:38 to play in the half.
Drew Bryson (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) ended the game by hitting three free-throws to seal the victory for the Warhawks.
UW-Whitewater returns to Kachel Gymnasium this Saturday night as they take on UW-Stout. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
