No. 12 Volleyball Hangs On for Road Win

The No. 12 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team dropped a narrow fourth set before claiming the fifth in convincing fashion Wednesday night in a 25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 26-28, 15-7 triumph at Concordia (Wis.) in a non-conference contest in Mequon.

Four players posted double figures in kills for the Warhawks (16-5 overall), who scored the final five points of the fifth set to claim their fourth win in the last five.

Freshman outside hitter Alexandra Bialo (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) registered a career high 15 kills to lead UW-Whitewater. Senior middle hitter Courtney Wagner (Dekalb, Ill./Dekalb) posted 14 kills, including two in the final five-point run in the fifth set, and eight blocks.

Senior outside hitter Lauren Pfeifer (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, and junior right side hitter Sydney Racky (Walworth, Wis./Big Foot) recorded 10 kills and a season best six blocks.

Senior setter Staci Hasler (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) collected 47 assists, four blocks and 12 digs.

The Warhawks compiled 14 blocks, while the Falcons (13-6) finished with six.

Sophomore libero Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) was one of five players with 10 or more digs, totaling 25 to go along with a team-high three service aces. Freshman defensive specialist Elizabeth Tworek (Lake Zurich, Ill./Carmel Catholic) finished with 11 digs, and senior defensive specialist Tessa Weber (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Tremper) added 10.

A 6-0 run early in the first set on Pfeifer's serve helped the Warhawks jump out to a 9-4 advantage. The team never trailed again in the frame following the run.

The two teams went point-for-point in the second set until the Falcons won five of the last six points to level the match at 1-1.

Concordia led for a majority of the third set until UW-Whitewater turned a 16-11 deficit into an 18-16 lead on the serve of Robinson and fueled by three kills from Racky.

The Warhawks led 7-4 in the fourth, but the Falcons chipped away at their deficit. UW-Whitewater was unable to stretch its lead beyond three points, and Concordia thwarted four match points to extend the contest to a fifth and deciding set.

The Warhawks return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this Friday against UW-Stout. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Kris Russell Volleyball Arena.
