Volleyball Defeats Carthage to Close out Panici Classic

The No. 11 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's volleyball team dropped the first set before claiming a narrow second set, followed by taking the next two sets in convincing fashion Saturday afternoon in a 20-25, 32-30, 25-11, 25-19 triumph over Carthage College at the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena.
 
Three players posted double figures in kills for the Warhawks (21-6 overall), who scored the final five points of the fourth set to claim the victory.
 
Junior middle hitter Courtney Wagner (Dekalb, Ill./Dekalb) registered 15 kills and nine blocks to lead UW-Whitewater. Junior right side hitter Sydney Racky (Walworth, Wis./Big Foot) posted ten kills, three digs, and two blocks, while freshman middle hitter Ashton Doll (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) tallied six blocks.
 
Senior outside hitter Lauren Pfeifer (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) tallied 12 kills and five blocks on the afternoon and freshman middle hitter Amanda Spera (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) recorded nine kills to go along with four digs and five blocks.
 
Senior setter Staci Hasler (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) collected a double-double with 41 assists and 13 digs to go along with eight kills and five blocks.

Following the conclusion of play, Hasler was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
 
The Warhawks compiled 15 blocks, while the Lady Reds (15-10 overall) recorded eight.
 
Sophomore libero Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) was one of four players with 10 or more digs, totaling 19 to go along with one service ace. Freshman defensive specialist Elizabeth Tworek (Lake Zurich, Ill./Carmel Catholic) finished with 14 digs, and senior defensive specialist Tessa Weber (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Tremper) added 10.
 
The two teams went point-for-point in the second set until an error by Carthage and kill by Wagner closed out the set to level the match 1-1.
 
UW-Whitewater went on a 13-4 run to open up the third set and never looked back. The team never trailed in the frame.
 
In the final frame of the match, the two teams traded points until the Warhawks went on a 5-0 run to close out the match.
 
UW-Whitewater returns to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next Wednesday night as it takes on UW-La Crosse. It is also Senior Night for the Warhawks. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Kris Russell Volleyball Arena.
